The Missile Test Sites in North Korea
Most missiles are launched from the east coast because Kim Jong Un's testing program is the most prolific, and he has expanded the in-use test sites. Most missile tests under Kim Il Sung (1984 to 1994) occurred at Musudan. Kim Jong Il shifted almost all testing to Wonsan, which is a coastal site home to an airbase and is able to host submarine-launched tests in addition to aerial testing.
Since 2012, missile testing has expanded across the width of North Korea with some as far north as the border of China, and others close to the border of South Korea. These moves make missile testing somewhat more difficult to track and study for international observers.
